What is Maxdale Bridge?

Location of Maxdale Bridge

The history of Maxdale is very mixed with ghost stories and mysteries that have been twisted and made up over the years. But what makes this bridge one of the scariest places I have been is that during the day there is a calming feeling, but once the sun goes down, things feel different.

This post will have both my personal experience and stories that have been made up over the years. So let’s dive right into it!

The Myth and The Mystery

Ghost Story #1

A girl, who was fishing under the bridge, told me that it was haunted by the lost souls of children who had been driven over the side in a school bus. She said there was even a memorial for them next to the entrance to prove it… it turned out to only be a placard placed by the builders, Hess & Skinner.

Ghost Myth/Story #2

The legend has it that a man once hung himself on the bridge, after his girlfriend drowned in the Lampasas River below. They say if you stop on the bridge, turn off your headlights, count to 10, and then turn your headlights back on, you’ll see a man hanging from a noose.

Ghost Story #3 – Maxdale Cemetery

It is believed that this very old cemetery is haunted by an old man with a limp, some say he was the caretaker of the cemetery. There is also a small old iron bridge you have to cross to get to the cemetery which is also believed to be haunted. If you go at night to visit the cemetery and you stop on the bridge turn off your headlights and count to ten, then turn them back on and there will be a man hanging from a noose, who is believed to have hung himself when he could not save the life of his girlfriend who had drowned in the river (now creek) under the bridge.

Ghost Mystery # 1

A man committed suicide by driving his truck off a small bridge on the road to the right side of the cemetery. Witnesses report a phantom old truck appearing behind them and chasing them for a moment, along with a sad presence felt throughout the entire cemetery.

My Experiences

Dating back to 2013 when I was dating a Military guy, we were deciding what to do one night. I said “ghost hunt” and they were all for it. By all, I mean his ex-wife and their friends. Well, we were looking at different places and figuring out how close they were to us.

We found a place, Maxdale Bridge which was about a 20-minute drive from the Base. Once we got there it was very, VERY creepy. I never experienced a place like that before, all sorts of emotions were going through me like a freaking roller coaster.

I can contest to some of the legends and myths that surround the Maxdale Bridge and Cemetery. There are some things that are very scary and some things I won’t ever talk about, but I will give a little idea of what I felt.

There are things that cannot be explained but only felt, for example, feeling of depression and complete sadness. Sometimes suicide like I felt there. I didn’t read about the stories until about a year AFTER I went there, and I can say this, those “possessions” are real and not to be played with.
